TOEFL Listening Practice-Tips to get through TOEFL Listening:
Listening is the second module of TOEFL. As its name clearly indicate that in this module one has to listens the passages. Listening may seems to be easy in TOEFL but actually it is not as easy as it seems. This is mainly because of the reason that after listening, the candidates have to give response on what they have heard.
In learning module all the candidates have to listens six passages. These passages generally have short word length that may vary from 250 to 300 words. Most of the time the candidates have to judge the important questions that can be asked from one passage at their own behalf. Thus they have to prepare their answer immediately after listening them.
Listening module can only be qualified if one must listen the lecture carefully and can immediately judge that what are the important questions that can be asked from it.
Listening pattern followed in TOEFL
In the TOEFL, listening module is completed in two sections and they are student conversation and academic lecture.
Student conversation- There are two student conversations in TOEFL. In student conversation either two students or one student and a professor speaks on any specific topic and another listens it carefully. This doesn’t mean that the students who read the content don’t have to go through the listening but questions are asked from them after completing of reading. Maximum number of questions that can be asked from one passage in this section is five.
Academic lectures- There are total four academic lectures in listening module of TOEFL. In this section, student participation may or may not involve. Candidates only participate when they are directed to do so. During the student participation, it may not always necessary that they have knowledge of the history of academic lectures. There are six questions that can be asked from one lecture.
One thing that is common among student conversation and academic lectures is that they both heard only once. It has been said that most important method of improving listening skills before giving TOEFL exam is to watch the English movies by turning off the subtitles. This may seems ordinary but it actually works.
What experts actually judge?
In the listening module of TOEFL, there are few aims of the experts and they are as following:
- Most important aim of the test taker is to judge the attitude of the candidates
- To judge the ability of candidates to know the relation between ideas
- To judge the ability of candidates to understand the primary concepts of the topic
- They also judge how well the candidates can organize the information
- Ability to understand implications is also judged by the experts
Understanding vocabulary is the key to success of listening module in TOEFL test. Basically the ability of the candidates to understand vocabulary plays a significant role in securing better scores in this module. Therefore it is necessary that one use make himself totally capable of understanding the same before actually giving this task.
